When the Alaska Folk Festival started out, as a free three hour concert at the Alaska State Museum, none of us expected that the event would still be thriving 25 years later.

So when we actually reached our 25 anniversary, the Festival Board figured they wanted something out-of-the-ordinary for the poster.

Some of the most striking art pieces I had seen in Alaska were the goldleafed icons in the numerous Russian Orthodox churches scattered around the state, and I decided an icon of the Mother Mary playing a three-stringed Russian balalaika would be appropriate.

But the Board thought the idea was "too religious."

So instead, I used Raven, the well-known Creator of the World in Tlingit Indian mythology. For some reason, no one thought a portrait of the Creator playing a balalaika would be offensive.
