Alaska is a really big place, and the range of traditional and immigrant European cultures is equally big.

As I planned my ninth Alaska Folk Festival Poster, I hd just recently heard about the Athabaskan fiddlers. The Athabaskan Indians occupied the central part of Alaska for many centuries — and continue to thrive there. Somewhere along the way, they had been introduced to Irish and Scottish fiddling, and the fiddle and its music became in integral part of Athabaskan culture.

When you're an artist, of course, you have access to a generous helping of artistic license. So I decided to dress my Athabaskan fiddler as an Eskimo instead — totally different tribe and lifestyle — and included one of my favorite Alaskan sports, the Blanket Toss.

So we have an Athabaskan fiddler in the Eskimo parka, on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, tossed in the air by a huge walrus-skin blanket.

To add a little more interest, I made the landscape into a guitar, with kayaks as tuning pegs.
